The Series Project: The Mummy

The Series Project: The Mummy

Film essay by: Witney Seibold

In 1922, archeologist Howard Carter uncovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt. The vast treasures therein sparked a frenzy of interest all around the world, and King Tut became a byword of mysterious ancient opulence, and, thanks to a few mysterious inscriptions over his tomb, the bearer of unfortunate curses to anyone who would disturb his mummy. The Series Project: The Cremaster Cycle

The Series Project: The Cremaster Cycle

Film essay by: Witney Seibold

Ah yes. Matthew Barney‘s epic Cremaster Cycle. Part artistic powerhouse, part surrealist tour-de-force, part impenetrable mindgame, and often considered Barney’s own self-indulgent, pretentious ego trip, The Cremaster Cycle is, it cannot be denied, a unique force in the world of art and a notable footnote in the world of cinema. Charles Band, the head honcho of Full Moon Entertainment – that once-ubiquitous straight-to-video entity that reigned supreme during the VHS era, and still has considerable cultural clout in my own fevered brain – I suspect, used to have childhood nightmares about toys, dolls, or other diminutive monsters. How else to explain his habit of producing, or otherwise being involved in the production of, literally dozens of horror films featuring toys, dolls and other wicked homunculi? (more…)

Enterprise A

I have admitted in these hallowed Internet pages that I am a hardcore Trekkie. So hardcore, in fact, that I say “Trekkie” and not “Trekker.” I feel “Trekkie” is reserved for the true, nerdy, diehard Trek fans, while “Trekker” is a revisionist term for nerds who are trying to deny their nerd-dom.

Good God, I’m uncool.

Pokemon Splash

This is kind of an attempt to put into adult language something only children understand.

I was going to start this essay with a battery of excuses as to why I, an adult male, have information on the universe of “Pokémon.” Why do I, someone in their early 30s, have intimate knowledge of the construction of “Pokémon” video games, opinions of the dramatic throughline of the “Pokémon” television series, or video copies of 9 of the 11 “Pokémon” movies? I will make no excuses other than to say my ex-girlfriend got me into it. If you want more, you’ll have to ask me personally. (more…)
