Ten Outsider Auteurs

The Top-10 Outsider Auteurs

Article by: Witney Seibold

Some filmmakers are legitimate auteurs who make deeply personal and fascinating films with a strong sense of a style, and a personal philosophy that is fascinating to walk around in. Hollywood is full of stories about how some famous or unappreciated talent has been stymied by the system. This is not an article about those people or those stories. This is an article about the outsiders. The hard workers. The weirdos. The outsider auteurs.

My friend William Bibbiani recently had an idea for a TV show, akin to Showtime’s “Masters of Horror.” He called it “Masters of Schlock,” and proposed that filmmakers better known for their idiosyncratic chaeapies would produce far more interesting fare than the average Hollywood hack. I agree. In the spirit of that idea, I compiled a list of ten such outsider auteurs, who I would love to see given the freedom to make their dream project. I speak of really, really obscure films in this one, so hold on tight.
