Like making up an imaginary country, or starting a telephone number with “555,” presenting an imaginary film or TV show within your film or TV show is a surefire way to take you out of your viewing experience. All of a sudden the film – which did presumably purport to be the real world – is now very clearly fake. The pop culture map is different. The universe is different. The fake title sends waves of unreality rippling through the entire film.
Despite this queasy feeling of verfremdungseffekt, thoug, some of the films and shows looked like they would be fun to watch. And it’s in that spirit that I compiled the following list for the good people over at Geekscape. A list of the top ten films and TV shows from within films and TV shows.
