I watched this film with a friend. He kept a tally of the various traumas suffered by the film’s protagonist. I don’t recall the exact counts, but there were several instances each of a) crotch injury, b) skunk spray, c) jokes involving urine or fecal matter, d) severe concussive head damage, and e) instances where the protagonist, even with evidence, was not believed by another human being that woodland mammals and other fauna were intentionally causing him harm.

Edgar Wright‘s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” based on a manga-inspired Canadian cult comic by Bryan Lee O’Malley, takes place in an odd parallel universe.

Sylvester Stallone‘s “The Expendables” is one of the noisiest movies ever made. Not ten minutes can pass in this film without a massive gun battle breaking out, a car crashing into something, or a gigantic landmark exploding. Near the end of the film, one character barked an order to another: “Blow the tanks!,” and all I could do was ponder what hadn’t yet already been blown up. But the film was as good as its word, and blew up something else.

With the recent overturning of Proposition 8 in California (and hurray for that), and the increasing visibility and open tolerance for gay couples in the world, the openly vitriolic intolerance experienced by the central gay couple of Ella Lemhagen‘s “Patrik, Age 1.5” almost feels forced and manufactured. Gören (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Sven (Torkel Petersson), a married couple, move into an idyllic suburb, and most of their new neioghbors are warm and welcoming, but, at unexpected moments, they encounter huge waves of strangely intense hostility from random people (a party is not mentioned, an angry father won’t let Gören treat his son).

The premise of Jay Roach‘s “Dinner for Schmucks” is, upon immediate examination, kind of cruel: A group of well-to-do American businessmen invite unwitting weirdos to a monthly dinner, and they secretly compete over who brought the biggest idiot.
